Personal Equity and Retirement Account (PERA)

News Update: The Personal Equity and Retirement Account or PERA tax rules have already been issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. With this development, RA 9505 or the PERA Law which was signed 3 years ago can now be finally implemented. Self-Employed Filipino citizens who don't have an SSS account can now set up their own retirement funds tax free!
According to the news article from Business World Online:
Revenue Regulations 17-2011, published by the BIR yesterday, state that a resident Filipino can contribute a maximum of P100,000 per year to a PERA account, while overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are allowed up to P200,000. An individual can hold a total of five PERA accounts.
The contributions, which will be received and administered by accredited financial institutions, can be invested in various products such as trust funds, mutual funds, insurance, pre-need plans, government securities and listed equities.
The contributions are exempted from a host of taxes such as the final withholding tax on interest, capital gains tax on the sale of bonds and shares, 10% tax on cash and property dividends and regular income tax.
PERA holders are also entitled to an annual tax credit equivalent to 5% of all their contributions for the year. Resident Filipinos can charge this tax credit against their income tax liability. OFWs, exempted from income taxes, can charge this against any other national internal revenue tax liability.
The PERA assets will be released once the account holder reaches the age of 55, as long as he or she has made contributions for at least five years. The release can be made either as a lump sum or as a pension. The assets will also be completely released upon the death of the PERA contributor, regardless of age.

First Influenza A (H1N1) Casualty in the Philippines
Posted On Monday, June 22, 2009 at by Sun JunIt's a bitter sweet Monday as the Department of Health (DoH) reported updates about the H1N1 pandemic here in the Philippines.
On the good side, 339 patients or 79% of the confirmed flu victims have fully recovered. This is great news considering that confirmed H1N1 cases here in the Philippines has surpassed the 400 mark. It also validates DoH's claim that the H1N1 strain spreading nationwide is of mild nature.
However, in the afternoon, the DoH also reported the first casualty of H1N1 here in the Philippines. A 49 year old woman who has a preexisting heart condition presented flu like symptoms last June 17. She died 2 days later, June 19. It was only a day after her death that she was tested and found positive of Influenza A(H1N1). She was reported to have self-medicated herself with only paracetamol.
This goes to show that although the H1N1 strain found here in the Philippines is of the mild variety, coupled with other diseases, the virus can be fatal! If you are manifesting flu-like symptoms, I think it would be best to seek professional medical assistance right away.
My mom is currently manifesting flu-like symptoms. I am worried. I hope she gets better soon.

First Swine Flu (A (H1N1)) Case in the Philippines

Thursday evening (May 22, 2009), the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the first A (H1N1) Influenza case in the country.The patient is a 10 year old girl who just came from the Canada and USA. She entered the country on May 18. The following day, she developed symptoms. Test results came back positive Thursday afternoon. The child was immediately given medication. According to the news, the child no longer has fever and cough but still has sore throat. The girl is currently being treated in quarantine. However, no information was given on where she is right now.
In another news, the DOH is monitoring 4 new suspected cases of flu. Among them is a 10-month-old baby who arrived in the country from Thailand. The baby girl is the youngest suspected A(H1N1) case in the country. Other new suspected cases are: a 64-year-old Filipina from the US, a 32-year-old Filipina from Hong Kong, and a 6-year-old boy from Germany. Test results for these new suspected cases are expected to come out on friday.
In the mean time, Health Undersecretary Mario Villaverde encourages the public to observe proper hygience, strengthen resistance and to avoid going to crowded areas if the need is not urgent.
I hope this can be controlled right away and that no outbreak will happen.

Have you heard? Pacquio'ed is now a word! Sportscasters and columnists have been using it to refer to a convincing victory in a sports event. Although the term has not yet been made official, I'm truly proud and happy for pacman. The more people that will use the term, the more acceptable it will become. That's why I'm sharing it here. Technology Business Incubator Philippines

As defined in wikipedia, Technology Business incubators (TBI) are "programs designed to accelerate the successful development of entrepreneurial companies through an array of business support resources and services, developed and orchestrated by incubator management and offered both in the incubator and through its network of contacts." Its primary role is to nurture and provide entrepreneurs basic support services and resources to help them grow and survive during the start-up period.
And yes, it is coming to the Philippines as well! The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is already undergoing a research study on the feasibility of a TBI in the Bicutan S&T Complex in Taguig City. What this means is that start up businesses here in the Philippines will get more support in order to succeed! Potentially, business incubators would be able to provide services from helping businesses develop a business plan to actually providing manufacturing services. One interesting fact also is that these services would be available on a pay-per-use basis. Business owners will be given the choice to avail of the service as the need arises and pay on an hourly, daily, monthly, or yearly basis. How cool is that!
I hope this project pushes through. With a technology business incubator by our side, starting up a business would definitely be much easier. All the resources that a business will ever need will be present in single compound. Wow!

The Pacquaio vs. Hatton fight is fast approaching and people have offered their predictions on who will win. However, nobody seems to be addressing the fact that hundreds of people from all over the globe, including mexican fans, will be in Las Vegas to watch the fight. The risk is definitely there for fans carrying the swine flu virus to infect everyone else. Filipinos, including all the congressmen, who are going to watch the fight should be quarantined before they be allowed to enter the Philippines again!
That's a long shot, I know. I just hope that everyone who goes to watch the fight will take extra precaution. I'm sure Manny and Ricky wouldn't mind muted cheers due to surgical masks. I'm actually half expecting both players to wear their own masks as well. hehehe ^^

Swine Flu depresses Stock Market | Swine Flu Prevention

Traders are worried that consumers might refrain from traveling and spending on food perceived to be less safe due to the outbreak. This brought a downtrend in the global markets which eventually affected our own market. Today, main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index closed at 2,061.05 which is 2.02% lower than its closing price last Friday (April 24, 2009).
What is Swine Flu?
Swine Influenza or swine flu refers to influenza caused by a strain of the influenza virus endemic in pigs. These strains rarely are able to pass from human to human until recently when outbreaks of the H1N1 strain has been found in Mexico and 6 other nations across the globe.
How is Swine flu spreading?
The virus is of the type Influenza A, and it contains DNA from avian, swine, and human H1N1 viruses. It is passed on through sneezing, coughing, or when people pick up the virus on their hands. The World Health Organization has ruled out any risk of infection from eating pork.
What are the symptoms of the Swine Flu virus?
The symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and influenza-like illness. In general, this includes chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness, and general discomfort. This strain has been reported to cause more severe vomiting and diarrhea.
What can I do to prevent from getting infected by Swine Flu?
The best proven way to protect from getting infection is to Wash you Hands! Experts generally agree that face masks, like surgical masks, offer very little protection. Therefore, the best way really is still to conscientiously wash your hands before putting them anywhere near your mouth and face.

Personally, I have a friend who's coming to the Philippines for a vacation this weekend. On his way here, he will be passing by three airports, greatly increasing his risk of exposure to the virus. I hope he and all other air commuters arrive safely.
