How to Create Multiple Streams of Income

In his book "Multiple Streams of Income: How to Generate a Lifetime of Unlimited Wealth", Robert Allen, discussed the importance of generating residual income.  Residual income (also know as passive or recurring income) is defined as income that you continually receive or generate even after the initial efforts have been expended.  In order not to confuse this with the other definition that states that residual income is the income an individual has after all expenses and debts have been settled, I'd like to use the terms "passive income" or "recurring income" instead.

Passive income definitely qualifies as smart money.  It is income that you generate without requiring much of your time or presence.  In the book, Robert Allen discussed three major markets where in you can get this kind of income.  And he said that all these can be achieved on a part-time basis, working right from your own home, using little or none of your own money, or with few or no employees.

In the next section, I will enumerate these streams of income sources which anyone can use to earn passive income.

-->

THE THREE GREAT MONEY MOUNTAINS

According to Robert Allen, the 3 Great Money Mountains are: The Stock Market Mountain, The Real Estate Mountain, and The Marketing Mountain.

STOCK MARKET MOUNTAIN

To be a successful investor in the stock market, Robert Allen suggests that you learn how to filter out which stocks to buy (FILTERING), know when to buy (TIMING IN), and know when to sell (TIMING OUT).  With the multitude of data present in dealing with the market, this may sound overwhelming, but the author also simplified it more for all of us.  He said that the easiest way to invest in the stock market would be to start investing right away (TIMING IN), invest in Index Funds which are the safest and simplest way to invest (FILTERING), and to invest for the long-term (TIMING OUT).  He suggests that you invest for at least 10 to 25 years in the process quoting billionaire investor Warren Buffett in saying "My favorite holding period is ... forever."

A little more advanced strategies that he introduces are:
- Following the strategies or letting your funds be managed by time-tested brilliant investors like Warren Buffett.
- Choosing mutual funds with the best long-term track records.
- Choosing financial advisors with the best long-term track records.
- Considering high-powered sector funds (Financials, Property, Mining, etc.)
- And lastly, he recommended but with great caution, to try doubling your money by investing in stock options.

REAL ESTATE MOUNTAIN

In order to make money in the real estate business, one must learn to do the 3 F's - FINDING, FUNDING, and FARMING.  Finding involves finding highly motivated sellers and making sure that the property for sale is a good deal.  Next you'll have to know how to finance bargain deals by looking for funds.  And once you've funded it, it's time to sell it and harvest your profits (Farming).

Robert Allen suggested 2 simple ways to be successful in the real estate market.

1. Buy and Hold with the intention of becoming a Landlord.  (He doesn't recommend buying empty lots.  He prefers lots with infrastructures that you can rent out.)

2. Flipping properties with the intention of buying them below market price and reselling them in the short-term for a quick profit. (Foreclosures and Flipping strategy)

The author recommends buying one property per year to hold into your long-term portfolio and flipping at least one property per year for short-term income.

THE MARKETING MOUNTAIN

Robert Allen referred to the Marketing mountain as the Business mountain.  Here we are required to sell something in order to earn an income.  He mentioned four businesses where this can be effectively applied - Internet business, Network Marketing, Licensing, and Infopreneurship.

-->
Infopreneurship is about selling information.  There's a lot of information available for everyone to use but not every information is packaged properly.  Your goal should be to sell information that everyone want to know about and package it properly so you can sell it.  This has become a tremendous hit in recent years because more people value their TIME.  We want information we can use and we want it fast.  Most common practices are to publish books and e-books and sell them in the market.

Network marketing is also referred to as Relationship marketing.  Most common these days is probably what people refer to as Affiliate marketing.  In affiliate marketing, the company selling the actual product pays you for customers that you bring or introduce to them.

Harnessing the internet as a tool to generate residual income is also one of the Robert Allen's advocacies.   The internet has revolutionized marketing and selling by lowering cost.  It is also available 24 hours a day without needing much care and maintenance.  It is a powerful technology that one must harness.  To be successful in it, he recommends automating everything and marketing or advertising to generate traffic.

MONEY WHILE YOU SLEEP

Robert Allen highlights the importance of investing in each money mountain and generating several income streams from each mountain.  Although this sounds simple enough, he also forewarns that while there are hundreds of separate moneymaking techniques and formulas for each money mountain, it can possibly take years to learn and master them.  In short, this is not quick money.  You still will have to put in your time and effort to make this work.  But the good thing about these income sources is the fact that after you've put in the initial effort, money can start coming in even when you are sleeping.

Let us all learn from this and apply it in our lives to generate multiple streams of income. I truly believe that this is one way where we can become successful entrepreneurs not only in regards to generating income and wealth but also allowing us more free time to spend it where it matters more.(^o^)/

Trading for a Living

Trading is a universal business.  Any where you go there will always be people wanting to buy or sell products or services.  This happens because no individual can do everything on his own and thus people tend to specialize on what they know, what they're good at.  So therefore they exchange their products (items or services) with that of another's.    It's been there ever since man existed.  And believe it or not, a lot of businessmen actually still make a living by simply trading.

In Mindanao, where a lot of the items being produced are agricultural products like rice, corn, and banana. Farmers, through middlemen, still send their produce into city centers, like Davao City,  looking for traders, usually small to medium scale businessmen, who would want to buy their products.  Ironically, businessmen from cities outside of Davao, also come to the city looking to buy the same products.  I guess, everything is traded in the "BIG" city because demand for it is higher there and therefore farmers can negotiate for a better price.

The trading business has definitely evolved much.  Now, you can be engage in the trading business simply by logging on to your computer.  Aside from the multitude of online sellers making a living through selling their products online, there is also the Stock Market where in people can buy and sell shares of stock of a listed company.  In this regard, trading in the stock market can actually be a profitable business as well.

I simply wanted to write this article about trading to remind everyone that earning a living need not be that complicated.  The simplest form of which is trading and it can done by anyone who has a specialized skill to offer or a product to sell.  It may not be the easiest but to tell you the truth, a lot of businessmen earned their first millions by simply trading anything they can find that others would be willing to buy at a higher price.

While surfing the internet, I came across this TV series called "Around the World in 80 Trades."  I've only seen the first episode but I reckon it is definitely worth your time. It is recommended especially for those who would want to learn a few tricks about negotiating and trading in general.  The 1st part of Episode 1 is shown below.  You can watch the rest of the series in YouTube.

Money Summit and Wealth Expo Day 2

Here are the highlights on Day 2 of the 1st Money Summit and Wealth Expo held on July 2, 2010. If you haven't read the highlights on Day 1 click this link: Money Summit and Wealth Expo Philippines.

The talks started around 9am which was a bit late considering the number of speakers they had lined up for the day.

Infopreneurship: Make money in the information business

First in line was a live recording of Joel Christopher's webinar called Infopreneurship: Make money in the information business.  Basically he defined infopreneurship as information entrepreneurship, i.e., selling information as your product.  Specifically he sold digital products like ebooks and audio books over the internet.  He suggested that you can either be one by becoming an affiliate (selling other people's product) or by becoming an info publisher (becoming an author and selling your own products).

Make Millions in Network Marketing

Rhea Horrilleno, a blue diamond member of well-known multi-level networking company Nu Skin, introduced us to making millions through Network Marketing.  A lot of the audience were very skeptical and may have been wondering why this was included in the line up considering that network marketing is often considered as a form of scam here in the Philippines.  But if you listened attentively to what Ms. Horrilleno had to say, she actually made a lot of interesting points.  For one, based on her own experience, she was able to illustrate that one can be a multi-millionaire through network marketing if you just take time to learn the craft - which is similar to what Forex guru, Mark So, wittingly referred to as "experience" on day 1.  And she was also right in saying that Multi-level marketing companies like Nu Skin already have well-developed systems which makes it easier for anyone to learn the trade and earn in the process.  And as we all know, it is an efficient SYSTEM that will make a business franchise-ready.

How to become a Pinoy eBay power seller

Eireen Diokno-Bernardo talked about how she and her husband started selling collectible items and Filipino handicrafts in the internet through eBay.  She was oozing with charisma and it was so easy to listen to her.  Although she didn't specifically say it, you can tell that her business has expanded and she no longer just sells items on eBay but also has her own display store and runs her own delivery company.  On a good month, she also averages around $10,000 in online sales.  She showed how you can use eBay and Paypal to sell products in the internet.  She also helps out would be online sellers for free!  Just look her up on the net and ask for her advice. (^o^)/

How to build a million peso home-based Internet business

Jomar Hilario talked about internet marketing.  He basically talked about the importance of using "keywords" to make your website rank high in search engines.  This is a form of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) technique.  He also talked about hiring virtual assistants to assist him in  this business.  Aside from these, I don't think he presented anything more but just invited the audience to attend his other workshops and seminars where he would teach and give out more details. (Which is exactly what most speakers, with a few exceptions, did.  In this regard, I found the summit failing a bit because it sort of became a product promotion seminar instead of a true learning experience.)

Make money in Franchising by Ms. Bing Limjoco of Francorp.
Start and Grow a Lucrative Multiply business by Ms. Regina Sambalido

Unfortunately, I missed most of the 2 seminars above because after sitting the whole day listening to the talks, I had to go out and drink my caffeine fix for the day.  Basically I think Ms. Limjoco presented the ways you can expand your business and earn more by franchising it.  Francorp being a franchise development and consulting firm targeted the talk to business owners who may one day want to franchise their businesses.

On the other hand, I think Ms. Sambalido just talked about how she started her online business for no fee through Multiply.com.  This was to illustrate that you can use social media sites like Facebook and Multiply to promote your business and sell items as well.

Boost Your Portfolio with Alternative Investments

A guest speaker from Hong Kong, Mr. Meng Aw from the investment company Superfund, introduced us to Managed Future funds as an alternative investment vehicle.  Alternative asset classes  are those not considered as traditional assets (cash, bonds, equities, real estate).  He presented that  Managed Future funds are now more accessible because of lower minimum investment requirements and that they are actually good for diversifying portfolios because they are not highly correlated with traditional assets.

Quick Profits in Foreclosures
Noli Alleje is the 3rd speaker in this conference talking about making money through real estates (foreclosures).  I heard that he's a veteran in this department.  He recommended that it would be better to purchase from banks because banks have the initiative to protect their clients (the client being you).  In case problems arise (like multiple people claiming ownership of the foreclosed property you bought), dealing with banks is easier as they are more willing to provide client support and return what you paid for the property without much questioning.  Unlike the 2nd speaker, Ms. Dayrit, Mr. Alleje did not encourage renovating and fixing the property that much.  He said that normally he would just clean the property and try to sell it right away.  He cautioned on overly  renovating the property causing the market price to appreciate making the property harder to sell.

The Rich Dad way to getting Rich

Jerome San of Laurus Enterprises closed the summit with his talk on The Rich Dad Way to Getting Rich.  He basically pointed out the highlights from Robert Kiyosaki's three Rich Dad books namely: "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", "Cashflow Quadrant", and "Rich Dad's Guide to Investing."  It was the perfect way to cap the seminar.  The Rich Dad books never fails to inspire.  As a last note, Mr. San expressed the importance of having all three investment types: Business, Real estates, and Paper Assets, to securing your wealth and truly becoming rich.

Boy, I can't believe that even just summarizing all these talks would take me 3 hours to write!  Well, I hope my efforts are not wasted and some of you out there are taking away a few lessons from this.  Remember always that we are here working to live and not living to work. (^o^)/

Business Idea: Wealth from Worms

In this commentary by Ernesto M. Ordonez at the inquirer, he stated that there is money in worms.  He stressed that worms provide wealth "both in terms of providing us cash and restoring our ecological balance."

Worms can provide cash through vermiculture and vermicomposting.  Raising worms allows you to produce organic fertilizers which you can sell for profit.  In the commentary, it was stated that "you can get as much as 250-percent return on six two-month vermicompost cycles."  Total annual profit was estimated at 200,874 pesos.  It wasn't indicated though how much land you would exactly need.

Secondly, worms help in restoring ecological balance.  Worms feed on organic wastes.  They speed up waste elimination which helps our environment.  Switching to organic fertilizers produced by worms also reduces the use of chemical fertilizers which contribute to the degradation of our environment.  As an added bonus, using organic fertilizers makes our food more healthy.  We, the people, therefore also benefit indirectly from this type of business.

More businessmen and farmers should really look into vermiculture and vermicomposting as an alternative business venture.  It truly is a great business idea, especially now that more of society is going "green".  Not only will you be earning a hefty profit, you can also be proud of your business.  There is a sense of pride in owning a green business.

If you want to learn more about vermiculture and vermicomposting, the article gave the following details:

New Business Idea: Electric Tricycles and Jeepneys

New Business Ideas

During this week's transport strike (Davao City), the city government deployed around 10 electric tricycles to give free rides to stranded commuters.  I thought electric cars would only be possible 4 to 5 years from now, but technology seems to be catching up fast and electric tricycles are already at play.

Next in line are electric jeepneys!  Although I haven't seen any type roaming the streets of the Philippines, for sure, soon models will be coming out as well.  My only concern is how we can preserve the iconic traditional SARAO jeepneys!  And what is to happen to our very own SARAO Motors.  I have attached pictures of possible layout of the electric jeepney with this post.  Would you consider riding one?

Owning your own fleet of taxi cabs or electric jeepneys, for this matter, can be a great start up business.  Especially if you can enter the market first and start even just a small business at first.

Home-based Business (Home-baked goodies)

Home-based Business (Baked goodies)
Ever wonder why people selling home-baked goodies multiply during the Christmas season? For obvious reasons, you might say that it's because a lot more people order baked goodies during the holiday season. However, have you any idea how much the potential market is? Read on to find out.

At the start of the "Ber" months (September - December), which unofficially marks the start of the Christmas season here in the Philippines, I started experimenting with baking brownies and asked our secretary to peddle them to bank tellers and store personnels. The response was overwhelming. A set, which is around 50 pieces of brownies, would sell out in just an hour! Clearly there was a demand in the market.

And so I continued selling them, positioning myself in this market segment for the December orders. Thankfully, a lot did order their holiday goodies from me. All in all, in just a span of 10 days, I was able to sell around 1,500 pieces of brownies (in different box sizes). In pesos, that amounted to around 10,000 pesos! That's like earning 1,000 pesos a day for just a few hours of work each day. Wow!

I wouldn't say though that it was the easiest 10,000 I've made in 10 days. I've earned more in even fewer days. I will share these stories in my upcoming posts. However, with this venture, what I liked most about it was that I didn't have to shell out any money for the ingredients! What I did was use my credit card for the ingredients purchase. I was successfully able to use credit in order to generate income! So when January came and my credit card bill arrived, I had more than enough money to pay for it.

With this business also, not only do you earn, but you also get to enjoy the compliments from your customers. It always feels good to know that you made someone happy. (^o^)v I think I will continue doing this business. Who knows? A lot of dessert shops doing good right now actually started from their homes as well.

5 Small Businesses with BIG Potentials

Here's an article I found at the Technology Resource Center Site about small businesses that do not need that much capital to start but have enormous potential.  The article is quite old but I think the concepts still apply.

-0-

The Technology Resource Center (TRC) is inviting aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs to start making their dream business come true this July. Top on the list of promising business ideas opportunities are five lucrative ventures zealous entrepreneurs may successfully embark on with a capital of less than P100,000.  TRC Group Manager Dr. Maria Rosalinda Lacsamana said these five courses are among TRC's Hot Business Picks for the month:
FOODCART BUSINESS
If you are serious on getting into the vastly profitable food business for the long haul, a food cart business is one of your best and least risky bet. You could start in the business with a simple but heavy-duty cart worth P5,000 to P15,000 depending on the material used and how beautiful you want it to look. It is always wise to start on the street-level, while you are still perfecting your recipes and testing the market for the best price. Being ambulant, your business can safely penetrate some of the best locations in town without having to pay a centavo for rent.

DRINKING WATER BUSINESS
Some believe the profit potential in a water station business has already dried up with the mushrooming of water stations nearly everywhere. The truth, however, is that it is easier for a smart new comer to succeed than it is for an established old timer who resists competition. With more Water Stations to choose from these days, people naturally look for the best quality at a lower price. This leads unwise business owners to think they can cut on quality and offer a cheaper price. This never works. People will always put a premium on health over a few saved pesos.

LANDSCAPING BUSINESS
Anyone with the talent and proper training for landscaping could start his own home based landscaping business. TRC's Practical Landscaping Course includes training in ornamental plant production, to give the entrepreneur a huge potential profit margin over the long term. Those just starting out can start it as a hobby. Later they can offer the service as a part-time business or on a freelance basis. Soon they can target large institutional contracts and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

HERBAL SOAP MANUFACTURING
The market maybe filled with too many soap products but that does not mean you have no chance of making it big. Indeed, despite the slippery competition in the presence of cosmetic manufacturing giants, the industry abounds with small soap makers who found a profitable niche. Anyone with a few thousand pesos can start this business. The challenge, however, is to come out with a high-quality and effective product not currently available to your target consumers.

COMMERCIAL BREAD MAKING
Conventional entrepreneurs believe they must build a street corner bakery in order to start a commercial bread production. This is not so. They can always sell to exclusive clients like groceries, restaurants, canteens and similar establishments at a premium. If you still want to go into the bakery business though, you don't have to set it up like everyone else. There are those who succeeded selling only high-quality pandesal. Others only produce hopia, or just cupcakes or large ensaymadas and did very well. These are just a few examples but the possibilities are endless.

Other Hot Business Picks for the month of July are Fashion Accessories Making, Money Changing Business, Laundry Shop Operations, Restaurant Business Operations and Flower Shop Business.
